ARC Review--Potions & Fangs by Jennifer Snyder and Alyssa Rose Ivy

College life bites…

Fern wants to blend in. On a campus with thousands of students she may finally have the chance, even if she has to contend with her witchy secret. Still, something is missing. Quite possibly someone. After sending an email to the guy she’s crushed on for forever she doesn’t expect an answer, let alone the possibility that their former co-worker friendship could turn into something far less platonic.

Holder is searching for himself. He took a chance and followed his passion for art to Savannah. Unfortunately, that same passion will lead to his death. Emails to Fern are the only way he’s staying sane and it isn’t long before he realizes he can’t survive without her. Literally.

College is supposed to be rough, but when you’re a witch trying to hide your talents or a guy hoping he doesn't sparkle in the sunlight, it just might be rough enough to kill you.

I received this book from one of the authors in exchange for an honest and voluntary review. I was in no way compensated for this review.

Alyssa Rose Ivy collaborated with Jennifer Snyder to bring us yet another amazing Paranormal New Adult book, Potions & Fangs! But what makes this book even more amazing other than being coauthored is that it's told entirely through emails! I've read books that are similar in format to this and I have to say it's quite fun!

Holder and Fern were coworkers at a video store in high school--am I the only one who remembers these too?--who decided to keep in touch after they graduated. They went to different schools some hundred miles away from one another, but decided to keep in touch. In the beginning their exchanges are over normal things about adjusting to college life. For awhile, you start to wonder what exactly is going to be happening here. We already know that Fern is a witch, though she doesn't admit it right away.

Then slowly, little details are added. A mother trying to force a relationship on Fern, a mysterious young woman trying to get in a relationship with Holder. Then Holder mentions being really sick and suddenly strange things start happening to him. Odd cravings, not being able to sleep, you can see where this is going!

This was a really quick read, I easily devoured this in just a few short hours! The emails read so quickly, it's almost like just reading dialogue from a novel. Yet their conversations tend to run longer and are one sided, until you get to the next chapter. The emails tend to go back and forth fairly regularly with a few exceptions every now and then.

Potions and Fangs was quite fun to read! Though I'll admit that since this is conversing through emails, there's not a lot of kissing. Obviously there can't be much but there are times when Fern and Holder finally get to visit with one another, but the story still sticks with emails as the storytelling mode. I mean, I guess it would be awkward to describe a previously held kiss with the one you had it with. But I guess that was the only thing I found rather lacking.

It's a bit weird reading nothing but emails too, because of that whole "show, don't tell" rule I remember English teachers constantly shoving down your throat. This is all telling, so it's kind of like giving those teachers the middle finger! Lol!

There's a promise of more to come in this series, which has me eagerly anticipating the next one. As certain things happen that put our starcrossed lovers on the same path, so I'll be interested to see how the emails continue to work. Also, if you're a big movie buff, you are going to totally love this! There are movie references throughout this, as the two used to work at a movie store. There's old movies and newer ones, and a personal favorite of mine as well which totally had me giddy that these guys would've watched it! Some references I didn't really pick up on since I never saw the movie, but there is a handy-dandy movie reference guide in the back that lets you in on all the references made!

Be sure to check this one out if you enjoy vampires, romance, movie references, and a unique way of storytelling. It can only get better from here, and it was pretty awesome to begin with!
