BATMAN: NIGHTWALKER BLOG TOUR: Review--Batman: Nightwalker by Marie Lu

http://www.rockstarbooktours.com/

Welcome to my stop on the Batman: Nightwalker Blog Tour!!

Before he was Batman, he was Bruce Wayne. A reckless boy willing to break the rules for a girl who may be his worst enemy.

The Nightwalkers are terrorizing Gotham City, and Bruce Wayne is next on their list.

One by one, the city's elites are being executed as their mansions' security systems turn against them, trapping them like prey. Meanwhile, Bruce is turning eighteen and about to inherit his family's fortune, not to mention the keys to Wayne Enterprises and all the tech gadgetry his heart could ever desire. But after a run-in with the police, he's forced to do community service at Arkham Asylum, the infamous prison that holds the city's most brutal criminals.

Madeleine Wallace is a brilliant killer . . . and Bruce's only hope.

In Arkham, Bruce meets Madeleine, a brilliant girl with ties to the Nightwalkers. What is she hiding? And why will she speak only to Bruce? Madeleine is the mystery Bruce must unravel. But is he getting her to divulge her secrets, or is he feeding her the information she needs to bring Gotham City to its knees? Bruce will walk the dark line between trust and betrayal as the Nightwalkers circle closer.

I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest and voluntary review for the blog tour, hosted by Rock Star Book Tours. I was in no way compensated for this review.

Marie Lu continues the DC Icons series with a favorite superhero of mine, and of course that would be Batman! I think it was the Michael Keaton movies that got me hooked. Don’t ask why! Lol! Batman: Nightwalker tells a tale of a young Bruce Wayne, long before his Batman days but perhaps played a stepping stone in the path that he would soon take.

Lately, the rich and famous of Gotham City’s citizens are being attacked by a group known as the Nightwalkers. Their homes are burglarized and the residents killed. Bruce Wayne is a bit distracted by his upcoming trust fund being opened to him, making him a legal adult and granting him access to his parent’s money. Though, as we know, Bruce isn’t the bad sort of rich elite. In fact, his tendencies to want to help the citizens of Gotham come from what his parents were always trying to do. And it’s when he’s trying to help the GCPD out in a car chase of sorts, he finds himself on the wrong side of the law. Needless to say the police weren’t too happy with Bruce and as punishment he’s to work at Arkham Asylum.

It’s there that he meets a young girl around his age named Madeleine. The police cannot get her to talk and it’s believed she works with the Nightwalkers. Days have gone by and she refuses to say a word, until suddenly she does, and it’s with Bruce.

While I am a pretty decent Batman fan, I have to admit, I was just a teeny bit upset with this one. I think it’s because when we get down to it, this is before Bruce becomes Batman. Sure he does a few things that aren’t exactly within the law, his Batman tendencies are showing just ever so slightly.

Add in the fact that I don’t know much about my superheroes other than what the movies tell me, then I guess you could say I don’t fully understand the comic book world, and I don’t truly! So I can’t say if there were more familiar characters in this one either. Though I did recognize one Harvey Dent! Harvey is one of Bruce’s best friends, so it was kind of interesting to see, much like Gotham in a way. Though I will admit, I couldn’t figure out if the Dianne that was also Bruce’s friend was a true character or not. Google didn’t really help either as I got a real person (I believe) with that name instead of this one! Lol! But it was kind of cool to see even Harvey, and Alfred, and Fox popping up. It gives me a sense of familiarity for being only vaguely familiar with comic book lore.

Madeleine was a strange character, again, I don’t know if she was a real attribute to the Batman world or not, but she was definitely one of those “villains” that had you wondering if she were truly villainous or not! That Bruce becomes a little enamored with her definitely put an interesting twist to things.

The pacing to this one was slightly on the slower side, but that doesn’t mean it was at all bad! I’ve come to realize that a slower pace usually makes for great buildup to other points of the novel! Such as the ending to this one! Holy cow it was wow! There were quite a few astonishing surprises by the end of this one! Certain things come into light and it just kind of spins your head around, but in a good way! I’ll be curious to see if Sarah J. Maas’ Catwoman: Soulstealer will have any reflection on this one. I was always a fan of the romance between Batman and Catwoman, we can thank Batman Returns for that…and the animated series if I recall correctly! Been ages since I seen the original one!

Overall I was quite pleased with this story. Sure, I would’ve liked it to have been a little more “Batman” like, but since Bruce is still a teenager I guess he can’t be off fighting crime this early on! I mean, at least not to the full extent that he will eventually do! Definitely a read all Batman fans ought to check out! It was positively riveting!
